The Story of Lucanid JP Strategy
Following my graduation from the University of Tokyo and its Graduate School of Frontier Sciences,I had the opportunity to play a key role in establishing the Japanese subsidiary of a boutique consulting firm headquartered in the U.S.
This firm, albeit compact with a global workforce of just over 100 individuals and a modest team in Japan, nonetheless demonstrated robust business performance. Throughout my five-year tenure there, I had the honor of serving as the Country Manager for the Japan office. Though the position may have been comparable to that of a team leader considering the company's scale, I regard it as an immensely valuable and significant experience.
From that point onward, one of my career's primary objectives has consistently been to assist foreign businesses in achieving success in Japan. The roles I have sustained include the following:
- Engaging in sales and marketing for an industry-leading company with a European headquarters (as part of the Japan/Asia regional team of a global cross-functional organization)
- Becoming the inaugural full-time employee for the Japanese subsidiary of a company with a prominent presence in Europe and the U.S., but with nascent operations in Asia
- Undertaking the position of Senior Manager consultant at a Big 4 firm (as the Program Lead in Japan for service lines that were initially developed and owned by their U.S. network firm)
- Assuming the positions of Representative Director / Country Manager for both a U.K. and U.S. company's Japanese subsidiaries
These diverse roles encompassed a range of responsibilities, including business development, account management, talent development, marketing plan creation and implementation, as well as intellectual property management, including trademarks and brands. While primarily serving as a sales representative in Japan, I also played a pivotal role in these additional areas. Notably, I take great satisfaction in honing my coordination and negotiation skills with both internal and external stakeholders, particularly those from outside Japan. These experiences have greatly contributed to my professional growth.
Drawing upon my expertise, Lucanid JP Strategy is dedicated to providing invaluable support to foreign companies and individuals seeking to expand their operations in Japan. Additionally, we assist Japanese individuals in achieving success within foreign-owned companies or venturing into international entrepreneurship. Our services are designed to facilitate and optimize cross-cultural business endeavors for our clients.

Our Brand
At Lucanid JP Strategy, our name is inspired by the beetles of the Lucanidae family, commonly known as the stag beetle or "Kuwagatamushi" in Japanese.
This beetle is deeply woven into the cultural and historical fabric of Japan. As a symbol of summer, it has kindled the imagination of children, often serving as the focus of their summer research projects. This beetle's appearance and behavior can be seen as a reflection of the spirit of curiosity and the pursuit of new knowledge. It symbolizes the essence of embracing challenges and continuous learning.
The term "Kuwagatamushi" has intriguing roots. It's believed to be associated with the "kuwagata" – a prominent fixture or adornment on the helmets worn by samurai warriors from the Heian period and beyond. These helmets, embellished with a variety of designs and fixtures, conveyed the dignity and individuality of its wearer. The powerful mandibles of the Kuwagatamushi are reminiscent of these "kuwagata" adornments, symbolizing strength and resilience.
As with the evolution of samurai helmets - transitioning from the "hoshikabuto" designs of the Heian era to the distinctive "kawarikabuto" of the Warring States period - the Lucanid beetle too boasts a diverse array of species and forms, each adapting to its environment.
In the ever-shifting landscape of business, adaptability and evolution are paramount. By adopting the Lucanid beetle as our emblem, we emphasize our commitment to innovation and adaptability, symbolizing our relentless drive towards sustained growth and transformation.
